Great Sound Quality, Limited Functionalty, and ExpensiveBACKGROUND: I am an experienced mp3 player user, and my currentother unit is a SanDisk Sansa Clip 2 GB MP3 Player (Black). I bought asilver 1 Gb iPod Shuffle primarily to use at the gym; however, I willalso comment about general usage as well. This is also the only Appledevice that I have owned of any kind.SETUP: There are two things to note about the setup process for theiPod Shuffle. Neither of them is complicated, but they are annoying.Unlike most other mp3 players that use a mini-USB cable for chargingand transferring music, the Shuffle requires the use of a proprietarydocking station. As such, I wasn't able to reuse any of the myriad ofmini-USB cables that I have from other devices. So you either have tobuy a second docking station or take the one that comes with theShuffle with you for charging away from home.The other thing about the Shuffle that I found frustrating was thatyou are limited to using iTunes for music transfer. Further, you canonly transfer music from a single computer. This is a very restrictiverequirement for such a low end device. Finally, I was surprised by howslow iTunes is. Believe me; the last thing I expected was for iTunes toperform slower (by a significant amount) that Windows Media Player. Iam no Microsoft lover or apologist by any means (I actually preferLinux).SOUND QUALITY: This is the area where I give the Shuffle its bestmarks. The sound is great whether I am playing m4p formats from iTunesor mp3s that I have ripped from CDs or purchased elsewhere. It is equalin dynamics and range to my Sansa Clip, and it even sounds good pluggedinto the AUX jack for my car stereo.Of note, however, I am not using the headphones that came with theShuffle. I have never thought of myself as having small ears, but Ifound that the headphones that come with the Shuffle seem rather largeand hurt my ears immediately after putting them on. For my workouts, Iam using a pair of Skullcandy Buds Ink'd Earbuds - Dark Gray becausethey are inexpensive, and the in ear style have a secure fit whileactive. While these ear buds will not win any awards, the Shuffle stillsounds good even using these.USAGE/NAVIGATION: This is the area where the Shuffle is way behindthe competition. Without a display, you essentially have one giantplaylist that is in the order that you put songs on the device. You caneither play straight through the list, or you can "shuffle" your music.However, I noticed that between 30 and minute minutes into shuffling,the first song gets repeated. This was with over four and a half hoursof music on the device. Unlike every other CD or mp3 player that I haveever had, I was surprised to find that the Shuffle repeats songs beforegoing through the entire list.If you decide that want to find a specific song, best of luck toyou. You have skip and reverse navigation, and you'll need a goodmemory of what order you synced things to your device. Ultimately it isnot worth it to try to use the Shuffle this way. It seems that it isreally geared toward the gym/active user who doesn't need a lot ofcontrol over their music. With this in mind, I can hardly see the pointof even having a unit larger than 1 Gb. It would seem to make sense tohave a 512k offering to better match the functionality.In short, it's great for working out, but it would be extremely frustrating to use this as your portable music collection.OPTIONS: Really, the only option that you have on the device itselfis the toggle between continuous or shuffle play. From iTunes, you canupdate the software for the Shuffle and change a few settings that mostpeople won't alter from their defaults.COST: You are paying a premium for the Apple name, but you probablyalready knew that. Apple's iPod Shuffle finally has a higher-capacity big brother.
This compact MP3 player was always great for active users who enjoy
working out, running or music listening on the go. The new 2GB model
offers consumers an Apple version of capacity the competition has been
offering for a year. Great as a gift, extra player, or exercise
companion.

Pros

- New 2GB provides better capacity at a lower price per gigabyte!!!!

- Enlarged capacity allows for more song storage and less swapping in iTunes!

- Compact and functional design

- Nicely integrated clip - No case needed!

The Form Factor

The long awaited 2 gigabyte iPod Shuffle has the same body that has
captured a large audience of fans. Size has always been the iPod
shuffle's greatest asset. The integrated clip is no doubt its second
greatest asset. Big intuitive buttons make fast learners out of new
users.

This unit works fine with no extra case, though there are still
case options. The composite case comes in one of several popular color
options, including silver, blue, green and purple.

Apple's proprietary headphone jack is still used for syncing. Most
competing players use a standard USB B port. Still a great overall
design.

Durability

Apple deserves points for the more durable player in this group.
Even with the composite body, these guys do hold up to a lot of abuse.
Creative's failure rates are too high, but Sandisk's Clip is gaining
ground in this area.

Capacity

The 2GB is LONG OVERDUE!!! Amazon's long wait times will surely have some going to Apple stores.

The 1GB size was Apple's only option for a LONG time. The market
has been flooded with 2GB players from the competition, as well as
shuffle lookalikes. Still, as Apple finally ups their size, Sansa now
offers the Clip in a 4GB size, though with long backorder waits.
SanDisk Sansa Clip 4 GB MP3 Player (Silver) Still, expanding options
makes the current starter MP3 market very good for consumers right now.

Features and Software

Competing players over simple screens for track viewing as well as
FM radio and voice recording. The Zen Stone Plus by Creative and the
Sandisk Clip each offer all three features at better price points.
Apple's reliability and brand loyalty has allowed the shuffle to
survive with limited features.

Competing players also offer drag and drop syncing using standard
USB cables or, in the case of the Sansa Express, via direct USB. Apple
still requires the proprietary dock.

It still seems excessive to have to use iTunes software to sync 2GB
of songs. Competing players have even worse software, but allow you to
drag and drop files on these devices like USB thumb drives.

iTunes is both a curse and a blessing, depending on your point of
view. For those who are used to iTunes or totally new to MP3s, the
interface can be a great plus. For anybody who wants more direct
control over their music collection, some of the features within iTunes
can become burdensome. Not to mention, it seems every week iTunes
requires a new software update.

Once again, if you LOVE Apple and iTunes, or if you are totally new to MP3s the software will still be a net plus for you.

For those that care about file options, Apple's software allows
only limited MP3 and AAC music formats. You can easily convert other
formats to these, but be aware of the limits. This is only a negative
for those really loyal to a certain file format, such as the growing
group of WMA users. Having to have 2 format copies of all your music
can really hurt as your collection grows.

Sound

The sound this unit produces is pretty good though not great. While
I still feel the first generation shuffle sounded much better, the
tradeoff was worth the smaller size.

Cost

The shuffle's price has finally come down to about $65 for 2GB or
$50 for 1GB. While not a bargain, this price makes the sting much less
painful for Apple loyalists. The dollar per gigabyte cost is at least
approaching that of competing players. The absolute dollar cost is
still a premium when you factor in features.

Players like the Sansa Clip continue to offer more features at this
capacity. If you want a small player and you are open to brands beyond
Apple, your options continue to expand. The Creative Stone Plus, Sansa
Clip, and new models from Samsung and Sony are all worth a look.

Once again, Apple's reputation is well deserved. This model still
requires you to pay a premium for it, though a slightly shrinking
premium. :-D

Conclusion

If you must have Apple and need a small player for high impact
workouts, this new 2GB shuffle is it. If you and can afford it,
stepping up to the Apple iPod Nano 4GB will cost you $140 but gives you
twice the capacity and video. Still, if you're not an Apple die-hard,
the Sansa Clip and other options deserve serious consideration.

Research your options and choose the player that's right for you. Overall this is a good player at an improved price.

Overall a good buy** Update June 11, 2009 **I just wanted to correct an error below where I indicated that theiLuv wasn't properly charging my iPod. I don't know what was happeningwhen I was trying it out but I really have had no problem across 2different iPods with charging since I posted the review.Still can't think of any use for the remote however... :)** End Update **I picked up the black iLuv iPod speaker system after doingconsiderable research online. These reviews are pretty helpful so Ithought I'd add my 2 cents worth so that you can know what you'regetting.By and large the other reviews agree with my experience. The soundquality is very good for a small unit. You want to pick a playlistbefore you go to bed otherwise you get whatever is randomly selectedfrom your library (I presume this is due to my election to shuffle allsongs in my iPod settings).I don't have much use for the remote but it's nice that it's included and it works well when I *do* play with it.The unit has performed excellently since I purchased it two months ago but I'll make some observations:- the rotating volume and tuning dials are apparently supposed tocontinue the click wheel paradigm from the iPod, but they do somechanically and are often a little awkward to use.- do NOT count on the unit properly charging your iPod. It *does*charge it somewhat so the iPod seems to me like it will runindefinitely while attached to the unit. But I've found that the iPodis not fully charged when I pull it off the iLuv. Fortunately,realizing this, I just make sure that I plug in my iPod when workingout in my gym or I leave it attached to my computer until it *is*charged when I'm picking up my podcasts in the morning. This may justbe my unit but it was a low point in my commute when my iPod batteryran out of steam that first time before I realized what was going on.I'm pretty rigorous about ensuring that it's charged before I leave thehouse.- I agree with others that the minimum volume for alarms needs tobe lower. The unit comes on and fades up to the pre-selected volumepretty quickly.- Finally the lights, that dimmest setting may seem dim in themiddle of the day, but it's pretty overwhelming in an otherwisepitch-black room. A "Glow" setting or similar would be nice. As it is,when I want to know the time at night I hit the dimmer button to checkthe time, then hit it three more times to cycle the light throughmedium and high intensities and then to off again.None of the above items are showstoppers for me, just 'nits thatyou can either live with or can't. Knowing what I know now, I wouldpurchase the iLuv again. It has most of the features I need and theprice is reasonable.Great Item!! Better than the rest!I spent a lot of time deciding whether to buy an iluv, iboom,iblast, ihome...you name it, I've condisered it. I went with the iluvbecause it had the most pro's over con's. Yes, the remote does not workvery far away, but the display is great. It has 3 adjustable dimmers,plus a completly dark mode. Two seperate alarm settings, in case youhave 2 people that need to wake at different times. The only thing Iwould change is that the display (time, date, radio station) is onlyviewable while the unit is plugged in. Even if you have the 2 double Abatteries in the system, it will only stay lit while its plugged in.The instructions say the batteries are for storm back up. Also, thevolume has to be at a minumun of 10 on the alarm. Its not to to loud,but I like to wake up to it a little bit quiter. No biggie. If youloose the remote (which is VERY tiny, probably the length of a middlefinger and the thickness of a toothbrush) the function buttons arelocated on the unit, which is always a good thing. Other than these fewand minor imperfections, it is a wonderful unit for the money and Iwould definatly recommend it.This one gets it right!I've been looking at the IH5 from Ihome for months. After readingreviews, I put off buying it hoping ihome or another company wouldimprove on it. I looks like the makers of iluv looked at the reviewsand took them to heart in designing the I177. Where the IH5's displaycould light up a room, the I177 has an adjustable display, including acompletely dark setting. Where some complained that the IH5's wakevolume was too loud, you can set the wake volume on the I177. Where theIH5's remote was optional, the I177's remote was included standard. Thesound is very good for a clock radio. All in all, I'm very satisfiedwith this purchase and spent $25 less than what I would've spent on theIH5. Glad I waited.The only negative I noticed was that the ipod insert didn't fit my5G ipod. In the manual, it mentions that this is subject toavailability, which I've heard can take a while. Fortunately, theinsert that came with my ipod fit perfectly. Problem solved. So forthose waiting, you can order it from apple if iluv is backed up.

Some nice improvement but incompatible with Bose...Having 16GB of storage is a huge plus for the new version of the Nano. The control wheel seems a bit "stiff" and it is not as responsive as past versions but it works fine.The menus and setup choices have been improved. These are nice butdon't make a major difference. "Shake" shuffle is a bit silly (in myopinion it is just as easy to push the advance on the control wheel)but it can easily be turned off.BIG MINUS - Apple un-necessarily changed the plug on this versionof the Nano. The unit will not charge using my older iPod chargers. Thebigger issue is that my Bose and other expensive speaker units willplay this Nano but they won't charge it.Apple is beginning to act more and more like Microsoft - forcingits customers to make un-necessary software upgrades and expensivehardware changes in order to use their latest product versions.Anyway - the Nano is a great product. Theaccelerometer might work well in the iphone and ipod touch, in the nanoit is just really annoying. It is way to sensitive and causes problemswith simple things like volume. The accelerometer often changes the nowplaying screen to the cover flow which keeps the volume from beingchanged without the ipod being pulled out and flipped. The shake toshuffle also causes problems, it is to sensitive as well and willactivate when it is not intended to. At least the shake to shuffle canbe turned off, I just wish the the accelerometer as a whole could beturned off. If it had that capacity this review could have easilyturned from a 2 to a 5.

The New Leader In Small MP3 PlayersBACKGROUND: I was in the market for a small MP3 player with primaryusage at the gym. I was looking for a rechargeable unit as my previousplayer ate AAA batteries about every week or so. I considered threeoptions of which the Sansa Clip was one of them. I eliminated the iPodShuffle due to its cost and lack of display. The other primarycontender was the Creative Zen Stone Plus (I rejected the non-Plusmodel due it its lack of display). I will reference how the Sansa Clipwon out throughout the rest of the review.SET UP: The Sansa Clip is about as simple as it gets in this area.It requires no additional software installation. My home system runs XPSP2 with Windows Media Player 11. When I plugged the player in tocharge, it was detected and recognized automatically. I told windows to"Take No Action" as the default behavior when the device connects. Thisallows me to maintain complete control over the syncing process. Myunit charged in about an hour.MUSIC TRANSFER: You have the option of using simple drag and dropof MP3 files to the device as you would a USB flash drive. However,using Windows Media Player allows you the more advanced feature ofplaylists. Since I primarily use my MP3 player at the gym, I createdmultiple playlists for warm up, workout, and cool down. The workoutlists are about 90 minutes while the others about 20 minutes. I reallyliked that I was able to create multiples of each for variety. Rightnow I have three of each with about 1.5 Gb still remaining to use as Iplease. Using Windows Media Player, you can sync albums, songs, orplaylists as you would with any other device. The Sansa Clip fullysupports all of these options so it is a nice low effort, highlyfunctional set up.SOUND QUALITY: This is an area where the Sansa Clip is prettyimpressive. I am using theheadphones that came with the unit, but I would image that higherquality headphones would sound even better. The player also has aseries of preset equalizer settings for different music styles as wellas one that you can customize.DISPLAY: This is a distinguisher between the Clip and the Zen StonePlus. The display is larger and easier to read. The mix of blue andyellow against the black background is also pleasant.NAVIGATION: The Clip has a normal four button dial that is commonto most small MP3 players. With the crisp, clear display it is easy tomove around and select music by artist, album, song, or playlist. Theonly thing that I have noticed that doesn't work quite the way I wouldlike is that if you navigate away from the song that is playing theredoesn't seem to be a way to get back to it to see the details of what'splaying. This is pretty minor, though, because I do not regularlynavigate away from the song that is playing.FM RADIO: This is about what you would expect from a unit with noexternal antenna. Strong signals come in clearly, but it is not goingto match what you can pick up on your car stereo. This is a nice tohave feature for me so it is plenty adequate.OPTIONS: As I mentioned previously, my primary usage comes at thegym. I had used the song timer to measure the time between reps whilelifting weights on my M230. However, the Clip has a power savingfeature that shuts off the display after 15 seconds by default.However, you can change this to 30, 45, 60, or 90 seconds which shouldcover your needs. After adjusting mine, I wake up the display aftercompleting a set. When the display shuts off, it's time for the nextset.USE ON THE GO: This is the other area where the Clip separatesitself from the Zen Stone Plus. You can clip the player to your clothesor an arm strap (I use the one that came with my M230). The Zen StonePlus requires purchase of a separate armband accessory for anadditional $15.COST: At base price, the Zen Stone Plus and Sansa Clip are a push.However if you factor in another $15 for an armband you have a clearwinner given the other advantages.CONCLUSION: The Sansa Clip is now the leader in 2 Gb small MP3 players. This is the first MP3 player I have owned. I own 1000+ CDs, and at
age 37, consider myself a bit of an audiophile. I have listened to some
songs from my phone, but never took the plunge to a dedicated MP3
player. Even after a few days, I don't know why I put this off.

First, moving music to the player was remarkably easy. I just
plugged it in, and the player showed up in Windows Explorer. I copied
MP3s from my computer, with no specific directory/file structure to
follow, and they showed up, sorted correctly by artist/album/song, etc.
No extra software to use! No iTunes or WMP or Rhapsody or
LockYourMusicIntoOurStore stuff!

Second, this is a fine interface. Yes, it is text-only. But that is
how I always listened on my phone anyway, I scrolled through the album
titles and when I found the one I wanted, I hit "play". Naturally, if
you REALLY NEED to see cover art, get a different player. But if you
are buying music, and not cover art (and also not little plastic disks
and boxes), then get this player.

Now I have already purchased eight albums from Amazon in MP3 format, with no problems putting them onto the player. Great playback quality, easy to use. I won't go back... I can't go back...

Mediocre performance and design at a premium priceThis radio from Sony is placed to compete with similar productsfrom Tivoli (Henry Kloss Model One) and Boston Acoustics (ReceptorRadio). All of these products are single speaker (mono) AM/FM radiosthat contain no CD or cassette players and have no remote control. Ifthat is not what you are looking for in a radio, this product is notfor you; however, if you are looking for a simple tabletop radio,continue on.Sony hoped to cash in on the popularity of simple table radios,however their offering falls short of its competitors. The radio isgloss black with a black fabric front that hides the speaker. It issignificantly larger than the other radios in this class, about doublethe size of either the Kloss or the Receptor. Despite the size of thecabinet, the speaker is roughly the same size as those found on theother radios. The LCD display is small and somewhat hard to read fromcertain angles (there is an acrylic prism sitting on top of the LCDthat reflects the image forward and upward). There are three knobs onthe front that control tuning, volume and tone. The radio is builtwell, but I think the black fabric makes it seem a bit cheap. Removingthe fabric cover exposes the cheap wood interior and lowers theaesthetics even further.By itself this radio has a decent sound, and the tone controlallows for tweaking of the sound quality. However when I compare thesound quality to that of the Kloss and Receptor, this product againfalls short. This radio lacked the bass response of its competitors,despite its much larger size. Midranges were decent, comparable to theothers (talk radio sounds almost the same among the three radios).Trebles were decent, although slightly muddled unless the tone controlwas set to high. On the plus side, the tuning was accurate and thereception clear, probably the best of the three, although all are verygood.The Sony radio has line-out/line-in 1/8" jacks in the rear forconnecting to an mp3 or CD player (as does the Kloss, but not thereceptor). There are no alarm-clock functions on this radio, whichfurther limits its usefulness. In conclusion, this would be a very decent radio if it were fiftydollars. However, Sony has set the price so that it competes withradios that are far superior to it. If you are to spend this kind ofmoney on a table radio, I suggest you look elsewhere (I recommend theReceptor Radio).Outstanding radio - worth every penny.I'm a happy camper now that I have this Sony ICF-M1000 radio. Foryears, I've always sought out the best in table radios and this Sony isthe top of the heap. As an employee of a radio station, I've long beenfascinated with how good or how poorly particular radios work. My firstforay into this world was an ancient (circa 1977) Sony AM/FM tableradio with a tuned bass port. It was always quite the conversationpiece in the office as fellow employees would marvel at the sound itproduced. As digital tuning radios came along, I found myself a SonyMegabass clock radio that not only sounded good, but had stereoreception and sound reproduction as well. Sadly, that radio workedbetter in my home than in the office, since our station is located inan office building not too far from the transmission towers. The stereoreceiver, the proximity to the towers, and the building itselfcontributed to a lot of "multipath" a phenomenon of terrestrial FManalog radio. I continued to experiment over the years with otherradios I'd come across, finally settling on a Tivoli Model One in 2001.That radio has served me well in the five years since I purchased it.Monaural and simplistic, it was compact in size and performed well.Again, fellow employees commented on the sound it produced. Whileshopping recently, I happened upon this Sony ICF-M1000 radio in a storein a shopping mall. Attractive in design - it looked very much like mycenter channel speaker at home - and adorned with simplistic functionknobs and display, I could tell right away, before I even heard it,that this would be a radio that I would just love. This particularradio was located in a store in the center of a mall and got virtuallyno reception, but I could even tell that the static it produced soundedlike hi-fidelity! Later on, in the same day, I found this radio inanother store, and was able to get reception since they were closer tothe outside of the mall. I knew then and there that I had to have thisunit, and began my search on the Internet. Prices varied widely, but Isettled on a good price with no shipping charges. Today, I'm sitting inmy office, writing this review, and listening to the marvelous soundsof the Sony ICF-M1000 radio. It's replaced my Tivoli Model One, as thereception is not only better on FM but AM as well - a difficult featinside an office building. I'm quite impressed with this Sony radio.Highly recommended. The Sony M1000 is currently being used on my desk at work as a
radio I can listen too during the day at very low volumes and then at
normal volume during after hours work. This environment is the basis
for my review.

First, looks, this is entirely personal preference; I love the high
gloss finish and the prism display. It looks high quality and everyone
who has see it so far has commented on how sleek and high tech it
looks.

Second, build quality, the radio is solid, the finish is flawless,
the tuning dials are solid and very smooth. The cloth screen cover that
you see in the pictures is a must. If you remove this, the finish
underneath is simple plastic and will not impress anyone. With the
cloth cover on the radio maintains it sleek look and makes everything
seem more complete. The push buttons on top are smooth and do not feel
cheap or brittle. Over all I think the construction of the radio is
very good and very solid.

Third, and most important, sound. This is really what everyone is
looking for when they look at these tabletop radios (See comments on
Tivoli Model One below). The Sony's sound is very good. I have heard
the Receptor, the Tivoli Model One (again, see below), and the Sony all
side by side. My opinion is that the Sony and the Tivoli are comparable
in sound quality. The Receptor in fact may have a slightly better sound
quality. This is of course my opinion.

Why I chose the Sony is for a couple of reasons. 1. The Line-In so
I can connect my XM radio was crucial. The Receptor does not have
Line-In and therefore was not an option for me. So my choice was Sony
& Tivoli. 2. The Sony, unlike the others, has a Tone Knob. This
allows a modification of the sound quality to your individual taste.
While this is not critical it is important. If anyone has experienced
XM radio, you may have realized that different channels have different
sound quality/EQ. Thus, some music sounds clear and well balanced and
others sound a bit flat. With the Sony I can make those flat channels
sound a lot better. 3. I actually chose the Tivoli Model One first and
this is the basis for my next comments.

The Tivoli Model 1, probably the most recommended radio when you
read reviews anywhere. Here is my experience: I ordered the Model 1,
Walnut case, and set it up on my desk at work. When I turned it on and
tuned a station, at low volume, the background noise/static from the
radio was annoyingly present. To the point where I kept trying to tune
the stations better. However the tuner was spot on and the stations
were as clear as could be. It was the radio itself creating noise. To
make sure it wasn't something else I tried the radio at various other
power outlets and locations, I added a `filtered power strip to
eliminate electrical noise and still the radio buzzed slightly at low
volume. To test the quality of the radio further I performed this test:
I set the radio to AUX (Line In) with nothing connected, I turned the
volume way up and the noise from the speaker was horrible. The internal
amplifier of the Tivoli is total junk. The speaker and cabinet design
is amazing and the potential is there for top quality sound. But the
electronics are poor at best. I went to the local Target (which
actually carries Sony, The Receptor, and Tivoli) and performed this
test with all the radios available. The Sony made no noise at any
volume level, every Tivoli (model 1, 2, and 3) made a lot of static
noise, and the Receptor is hard to tell because there was no way to set
it to a "line-In" to test with no input. After seeing this I
immediately returned the Tivoli and bought the Sony. I have been very
happy with my decision.

Lastly price, the price of the Sony is acceptable. I paid $140 here
on Amazon with free shipping. The Tivoli (which everyone seems to
recommend as better) is 120. For $20 more I feel I have the better
radio. It makes no static, it has a digital tuner (not a dial with
light), the line-in works great, and it looks more high tech and looks
like better build quality then the other two.

So in summary, If you like the looks of the Sony and can fit the slightly larger size, then I recommend you go for it. The Tivoli is junk, and the Receptor does not have Line-In ability. For the price I think you are getting a very nice table radio that performs well from very low volume to normal listening volume.

There were only two orthree docks out there that had both aux out and FM transmitterfunctionality. Most of the reviews I read mentioned the terrible clipsthat hold on to the iPod and the flimsy necks that flop around on roughroads and I agree. The FM transmitter works well and puts out a goodclean signal but is nowhere near the quality you get when you use theaux line out. The "clearscan" feature looks for the cleanest radiochannel on which to broadcast and the functions are easy to use. Mybiggest issue is with the overly complicated use of different clips andrubber pads needed to accommodate the different iPod models, they shipyou about 6 of each and they are all incredibly tight. This is probablydue to the fact that the base tilts to allow the different models to gointo landscape mode but I would have preferred a clamp that can beadjusted. I use a stick on "skin" to protect against scratches and itwas nearly impossible to insert and remove the iPhone withou a lot ofeffort and the skin is only a few millimeters thick. I ended up heatingup the clips to get them to open up a bit. Some people have reportedthe clips breaking within a few days of use, but "bending" them out hasallowed them to function problem free for a few months now.I really miss my old DLO Transdoc but it isn't compatible with the newer iPods and iPhone that don't support firewire charging.Well designed, but doesn't workI have had a Griffin RoadTrip for years now, so I am aware of thelimitations of FM transmitters. There wasn't one available for aniPhone so I gave this a try.The product is well designed. The instructions are clear. It hasadapters for every type of iPod/iPhone, and it all goes together verynicely.But the signal is very weak. Even on an empty channel there is somestatic, and on a trip of any length it is necessary to constantlychannel hop. Compare to my RoadTrip, where I can put it on 88.1 anddrive all around the NE USA without any issue.

The Suprise Price and Great Build Make This a Fantastic MP3 PlayerAlthough there are no large differences between the last iPod withVideo Playback (like there was with the Nano), Apple has done someimprovements that should be to your liking. The black and chrome model does show smudges and scratcheseasily, so you may want to invest in a cover or a case in addition tothe black velvet sleeve that comes in the box (nice, but you can't hitthe controls or see the screen through it). Other than those minorquips, all you need to do is plug it in to your PC or Apple computerand it automatically registers itself and downloads everything you havein iTunes (with an option to download your photos as well). The screen in this updated 6 generation is brighter, and thebattery life is a little longer. Playing music without the backlightactivated will last over 14 hours. Watching video or having thebacklight on constantly will drain the battery at just over 3 hours.Not ideal for a Transatlantic flight or one to Europe, but great fordomestic air travel and short commuter rides. You have to think of thisas a music player with bonus video feature, rather than as a portableDVD player (even with movies added to iTunes). If you are in the marketfor more video seek out the 80 GB model which is has longer batterylife and more memory to hold up to 80 features instead of 30 flicks atmost. The unit is slimmer, the click wheel slightly improved, and it'sabout $50 cheaper out of the gate than the last models. In the box you get the white basic headphones, a USB cable (noFirewire since the iPods are not Firewire compatible), a black velvetpouch for storage, a quick sketchy instruction booklet, and a dockingsleeve for when you get a docking accessory. There is no iTunesinstallation CD, so be sure to download the program before you plug in.The Way it Should Be
My wife and I had previously owned two Philips GOGear HDD6330 30GB
mp3 players and had many many problems. Mostly with syncing the songs
onto the devices and also some with proper playback. The interface was
also not as nice nor responsive as the iPod. So we returned the Philips
players and got an 80GB and 30GB iPod. Neither has let us down once.
They sound great, the battery lasts for days (4-6 hours a day use).
itunes is very easy to use and seems to almost know what you need to do
before you do. podcasts are neat and free, you can download tons of
videos from google video, you can put pictures on it, no problems
finding accessories. It is really just night and day vs. the current
windows based offerings. On the 80GB iPod we have about 6,500 songs, 50
videos, 200 photos, and all of our outlook contacts and it is only
about half full. Not to mention the games that come with it. If you
don't mind spending a little more for quality, this is the way to go,
it just works.

My wife uses the 30GB white version and loves it. it does have a lot less space and shorter battery life than the 80 GB, but it is much slimmer feeling as far as the thickness and still has all of the other features that make iPods so great. We also both sync using the same itunes without any problems (turn off auto syncing to do this and drag songs etc to device.) This was not the case when we both were using Philips GoGears and Windows Media Player. Everyone else that I know that owns an iPod has never said anything bad about them, Apple really has a winner here, it would take a lot of convincing to ever switch me back over to windows based mp3 systems.

The AVR-888 offers a power output of 100 watts per channel, but adds anumber of engineering advancements to get the most out of thetechnology. One of the most significant--7-Channel Equal Power--letsyou connect seven speakers independently without connecting individualpower amps via pre-outs. That's because the AVR-888 comes with abuilt-in internal amplifier for each speaker in your collection. Thismakes it possible to do things like connect a second surround backspeaker directly off the main amplifier to play 7.1 surround formats.The receiver also boasts a 32-bit floating-point digital signalprocessor (DSP) to improve audio quality. In addition, thereceiver is equipped to handle the latest in HD video support, withsuch features as Deep Color up to 36 bit, 1080p video pass-through,10-bit encoding and decoding, and Faroudja DCDi video processing. The two-zone, multisourcesystem lets you select different audio sources for listening indifferent locations, letting you simultaneously listen to the DVDplayer in the main room and the iPod in the bedroom, for example. Thereceiver also offers compressed audio restoration, an audio technologythat restores the fidelity of compressed MP3, WMA, and AAC formats toreproduce a higher frequency range and deeper bass performance. And tomake iPod playback easier, you can connect the receiver to Denon'sseparately sold ASD-1R iPod docking station, which lets you controlyour iPod through the receiver's display. Other user-friendlyfeatures include XM satellite radio compatibility (requires asubscription and an optional plug-and-play XM antenna), a night modefor neighbor-friendly listening, an auto surround mode, and a volumelimiter that lets you set maximum volume levels.

Connectivity and Setup

The AVR-888 offers a host of inputs and outputs for connecting todiverse audio and video sources. The most significant is HDMI v1.3a,the digital interface standard for next-generation TV. With thereceiver's two HDMI inputs and one HDMI monitor output, you can easilyconnect to such devices as HDTVs, DVD players, video game consoles, andcable and satellite boxes, each through a single cable that handlesboth high-definition video and multichannel audio signals. HDMI is alsocompatible with High-bandwidth Digital Contents Protection (HDCP), atechnology for protecting copyrights that encrypts digital videosignals. If your components don't offer HDMI outputs, you still haveplenty of options, however, as the receiver also offers three componentinputs, five S-video and five composite inputs, six total digital audioinputs (three optical and three coaxial), and nine analog audio inputs. The receiver also lets you input multichannel audio signals,whether in high-definition MUSE 3-1, SACD, or DVD-Audio formats, viathe eight-channel input. Do theresearch on this and compare to others at the same price and you'llagree. Some reviews say it's difficult to setup and for an hour iagreed. After figuring out that i couldn't use an analog signal foraudio with the digital video and plugging in optical rather than thewhite/red cables that come with component this thing sparkled. Itreplaced an older Kenwood that I paid about $500 for several years backand the sound difference was amazing. Everything is so clear and thedarn thing is smart. After going through the auto setup the receiverknew exactly where and when to play certain noises. It's so easy tooonce you get the hang of it. I recommend using component to performsetup because it gives the full menu on your TV screen...other wise youhave to guess on it's little display to move up or down, which isn'tobvious. The menu is a little vague but people who have played withthese things will catch on quick. The remote is a little wierd butworks fine if you look at the directions. This previous year modeldoesn't come with the new hd converters but most newer hd equipmenthave their own. Comparing to the Onkyo versions such as the new 606,this has great video quality. Colors come out great. Plug everything incorrectly, and it's labeled pretty clearly, run the auto setup, and sitback and enjoy. The easiest way is to use HDMI and then you don't runinto my digital/analog problem but if you use component cables,remember to use an optical cable or coax for audio. This lets youassign any input to any device....that's great if you ask me. Doingthis you don't have to worry about which port you plug into, justchange it however you want. There's plenty of inputs for everythingA bit too high techSeems like this could be a kick a@@ system, but I have been havinga problem since we brought this home - surround sound cuts out randomly- have tried switching from analog to Digital Coax this did not fix theproblem - receiver says H/P on when it cuts out and H/P off when itgoes back on....I have called Denon cust svc 3 times with an average wait time of 1hour and 20 minutes each time (I am currently on hold @ 56 minutes with4 calls ahead of me.... My old Yamaha receiver finally died on me and I needed a
replacement. I wanted something that I could grow into and the Denon
AVR-888 seemed to fit my criteria. First of all, it is one of the only
home theater receivers with a phono input (which may not matter to most
people).

The setup only took about 15 minutes and the sound is incredible.
The manual is pretty poor, but with a little bit of patience, it can be
figured out.

All video signals are running through a component video switch and
into the Denon (except for the pc which uses DVI direct to the tv or
HDMI to the projector). The picture is crisp with no degradation.

The sound from this unit is nothing short of amazing. I can't wait until I wire up my rear surround speakers for 7.1 surround.

If you're in need of a high quality, low cost receiver, buy the Denon AVR-888. You won't be disappointed.

Zune- bye, bye Zen and Windows Media tooI have a couple of Zen MP3 players that have worked well for me fora couple of years now, but both have begun to have problems and Idecided to take a chance on the new V2 Zune. It was a good decision.This is a great product. All that comes in the box is the Zune, a synccord, earphones, and brief documentation. You need to go online anddownload the Zune software to a PC and then hook up the player beforeyou can get it to do anything. This doesn't take too long and the Zunewill provide you with some sample content to try out as part of thisprocess. The Zune sounds great, with plenty of volume and a decent setof earphones. The click wheel is intuitive and masterable in just a fewminutes use. As nice as the Zune is, a pleasant surprise is the Zune software.This is really more than just a tool to sync your tunes with your Zune.It is an attractive, intuitive, easy to use full fledged media playeras well. It can easily replace Windows Media Player and is betterlooking than any other offering out there- Apple included. The 2 Gig. Twice the Storage in Case You Need It.I've long thought about buying an iPod, but the price always heldme back. When Apple recently lowered the price of the shuffle, Ijumped. But I did spend a little extra and buy the 2 GB model. I mean,for $20 more, who wouldn't?This model actually allows you to input 1.89 Gigs of music. Why thedifference? Because the iPod needs some space for the software.Depending on the size of the songs, that translates to roughly 500songs. The first time around, I got 498 songs on it, and I had three 11minutes song included. I just reloaded and got 528 songs on. I did usea different computer (although it had to erase everything because itonly connects with one computer at a time), but it looked like itgrabbed shorter songs this time.The iPod comes with everything you need to get started. You've gotthe device itself, the ear bud headphones, and the docking device. Youuse this device to connect your iPod to your computer. While connected,you can load songs from iTunes and charge the device.And that's one of the weaknesses of the device (and Apple ingeneral). You can only load songs from their music player. Fortunately,anyone can download iTunes from Apple for free, so that isn't an issue.But it would be nice if it worked with other programs. Additionally,you must plug it into a computer to charge it.Loading songs is pretty straight forward. You can either create a play list for it to load or have it load up random songs.The device is small and lightweight. But what I love is the buildin clip that allows you to attach it to any article of clothing. Ibought it mainly to use while running or working out. It's perfect forthat. Just clip it and forget about it. And, at half an ounce, it is solightweight you don't even notice it.The controls are well laid out and easy and obvious to use.My biggest complaint is one I knew I would have before I bought it.If you've put one song on the iPod and decide that is the one youreally want to hear, good luck finding it. There is no screen. You cantell it to play in shuffle or in playlist order. But you have to skiptons of songs to find the one you want.The battery lasts about 12 hours. And with 500 songs, you get over30 hours of music. So you really don't need all those songs since youcould just pick different songs every time you charge it. The only timeit indicates battery strength is when you first turn it one, whichseems strange. If you don't check as soon as you turn it off, you mightturn it on some time to find it is out of juice.I also wish the noise level was standardized. I have to adjust the volume on practically every song.So do you really need the added storage capacity of the 2 GB model?That's for you to decide. But if you just want something to play a fewrandom songs for you while you do other things, this is a great modelto get.iPop Shuffle works fineWhat's there to say? Best flash player on the market, great even for large music collectionsThis is a great choice for those people who previously limitedtheir flash players to workout duty, or only holding a small piece oftheir large music collection and having to change the music on it everyso often. With a 16GB capacity most people can fit their entirecollection on here without difficulty, and even have room for somevideos.First impressions of this player are very good. It is extremelyappealing to the eye, everyone who sees it will ask about it. It isabout the size of a credit card, just thicker (less than 1/2inch). Thefront is a very glossy black plastic that looks great until you touchit, instantly covering it with fingerprints :) The back is a rough,cheaper feeling black plastic. Overall it has a nice solid weight andfeel to it, but not very heavy. This will easily fit in a pocket.The 2.5" screen is absolutely gorgeous. Very bright with vividcolors. The viewing angle is very good, two people can easily look atthe screen at the same time while watching a movie for example. Themenus are all nicely animated and intuitive to navigate. The icons andtext are big clear and easy to read.One of the big perks to having so much capacity is plenty of roomfor videos. This was one of the first things I've tested as it was abig reason for my purchase. First of all it DOES play Amazon Unboxvideos perfectly. Transferring files was very easy (just a few clicks)and very quick. The quality of the video was great as well. The maxsize of videos is apparently 320x240, I have not been able to get it toplay anything larger than that. If the video is smaller (for examplewidescreen) you have the option of playing it at the correct aspectratio, or fill the screen (stretched out). I've gotten it to playvideos encoded in Xvid and WMV format. Xvid files were encoded withAutoGK, and the WMV files were encoded with Arcsoft MediaConverter. Ifyou synchronize with Windows Media Player, you can put in *almost any*video file and it will automatically convert the file into WMV formatand then transfer to the player. How long it takes to convert dependson the type of video you're encoding, how big the file is and of coursethe speed of your computer.Music sounds very good on this player, but please... get rid of thestock headphones they are horrible. Using a decent pair of headphonesmakes a HUGE difference. The EQ options are OK, there are about a halfdozen presets and a customizable EQ. The "Bass Boost" option just madeit worse in my opinion, it just distorted the sound. Otherwise it is avery even and balanced sound, very similar to the Vision:M. The FM radio has a whopping 32 presets and the reception is prettygood. Strong stations are in stereo, weaker ones come in mono. Ihaven't had a chance to test out the built-in mic.I easily transferred music and playlists onto this player fromWindows Media Player and MediaMonkey, as well as protected music (WMA)from Napster. Everything was very easy, usually just dragging anddropping. The speed of transfer is probably the fastest I've seen. I'veused this player on XP Home and on Vista Premium 64-bit.Regarding the SD cards. I think its only a slight inconveniencethat the memory card media isn't directly integrated with the othercontent. Meaning if you have videos on the SD card you don't go to the"Video" menu where all the other videos are, you have to access themthrough the "Memory Card" menu. Once there, you browse through the filestructure like normal. If you organize the content smartly on yourcards you should have no problem. And really its a small price to payfor that feature. Currently SDHC cards are up to 16GB in capacity,meaning you could double the capacity and carry around 32GB worth ofcontent in your pocket. Amazing. I tested a Kingston 512MB SD Card anda Kingston 2GB microSD card (with adapter of course) and they wererecognized and played the content without difficulty.A quick note about the firmware. Mine came with 1.10.05. When myplayer turns off, it really turns off. With newer firmwares when itturns off it goes into a sleep mode for a while before it finally turnsall the way off. What that means is with the older firmware each timeyou turn it on it has to "boot" all over again, whereas with the newerfirmware you get an "instant-on" at the expense of slightly reducedbattery life (since it is asleep and not off). Igot the 4 GB version of the player; it's the smallest version but itstill lets me put my favorite 60 albums or so on the player. If I wantto listen to other albums, I put them on a spare SD card and pop thecard in the player, it's easy.Of course this will be more and more of an advantage - right now,8GB SD cards cost about half as much as this player, and I'm sure overthe next year 16 and 32 GB SD cards will get released, at comparableprices. I have a very large music collection, I like the idea of beingable to stick a very large collection on a very small player.The interface for this device is, like the iPod, pretty good butnot great - sometimes you feel like you're working against the menusystem. The worst fault is, music on the SD card is put in a separatelist than the music on the device's internal memory - it's a littleclunky, if not terrible. Also annoying is that the player takes about10 seconds to boot up, whereas the iPod turns on instantly.The screen quality is very, very good, the included videos lookexcellent - on the other hand, it's a small screen for watching amovie, and converting a normal .avi file to the required formatrequires a couple hours. So except in special circumstances I don'texpect to be doing that often.The battery lasts a very long time, and charges quickly off USB.The sound quality is pretty good, and I've heard it's better than theNano, but I haven't done any direct comparisons so I can't really say.Also, be sure to update the firmware off the Creative site, it onlytakes a few seconds. The firmware as shipped would constantly crashwhen I accessed the SD card. After the update I haven't had a problemonce.

Best sound in a stand alone system.Between my wife and myself we own a JBL On stage, an InMotion IM3and this Bose SoundDock. They each have their advantages and purposes:The Bose SoundDock has, by far, the best sound of all three:Absolutely beautiful, clear and rich, with powerful base. Note thatit's too big to easily throw in your suitcase for a 2 week vacation,but is small enough to easily move between rooms. If you want greatsound, are OK with generally leaving this home, and are OK with theprice, this is the one to get. IMO the remote is just the best forthese kinds of systems: It has an instant off button that will turn offyour iPod backlight and screen while it continues to charge (this issueis a bit of a hassle on the other systems), as well as buttons fornext/previous track (or scan within track) and volume control.The InMotion IM3 is the only one I have which will play onbatteries, is extremely portable and includes a decent remote. It's themost cost effective and portable of the three, and it has really decentsound.The JBL On Stage is a nice compromise. The sound is quitenoticeably better than the InMotion, most significantly in the low end.For a very small room, this unit is so good that you might not miss theBose. It's small and light, so it's very portable, but unfortunatelydoes NOT play on batteries, and has no remote. Note, we did have aproblem with this unit as others have described (don't put your iPod inits cradle while the sound-stage is powered on.) It went bonkers, andthe nice people at the apple store replaced it on the spot. No problemssince. If you want this kind of portability and sound but feel you needa remote, you can buy the $50 navipod remote, which works with theon-stage for switching tracks. (It works with volume too but not if youput your ipod in the dock cradle, instead you'd need to use theon-stage's separate audio cable.) I tried a Delius piece that's almost entirely for stringorchestra -- all midrange frequencies. I heard static over the strings.I tried a flute piece. The highest notes actually broke up. A U2 remixfrom four years ago sounded one-dimensional.To make a long story short, after spending an hour talking to Boseand Apple, Apple kindly gave me my money back. (Bose refused.) I wastold by both that the problem was my iPod Photo. I have a hard timebelieving that. I know of people who have used their iPod Photo withthe SoundDock and have not had problems, and there are publishedarticles with quotes from Bose reps saying the iPod Photo will stillwork without the still-awaited new plastic adapter. Draw your ownconclusions with that information.After all that, I bought a new Sharp shelf system to replace mydying Aiwa (The loss of a stereo had been my motivation for buying theiPod). I bought that backup stereo *and* a pair of HK II Soundsticksfor *less* than what I paid for the Bose. The sound quality of bothbetters the SoundDock, especially the HK's. If you're a parent looking for speakers for your teenager's IPod, Igenuinely recommend investing in the HK's. There is no reason to spend$300 on the Bose SoundDock when there are better speakers for half theprice, unless you fall for the convenience factor and the design, whichI did. So much for that.Or if you've got line-out jacks, just buy an RCA Y-plug and hook upyour iPod to an existing stereo. You'll be spending only $3.00 asopposed to $300.00.

best iPod clock radio you can buy - great sound, great radio, compatible with new iPods and iPhoneUPDATE: Sony has updated this clock radio with a new model - theICF-C1PMK2 - which has even better AM reception, a brighter display,and official iPhone compatibility.Several weeks ago, I upgraded to a new 160GB iPod Classic. At thesame time, I bought an XtremeMac Luna clock radio, which had goodreviews. Unfortunately, I found that the Luna is incompatible with thenew iPods - it cannot wake them from deep sleep to play the alarm inthe morning. A call to XtremeMac got nothing more than a note that myissue had been forwarded to their technical team.Without any reviews, I took a chance, and ordered the Sony ICF-C1iPiPod clock radio, and am I glad I did! The Sony is fully compatiblewith my iPod Classic, and Sony includes instructions for using theiPhone as well. And, the sound quality and radio performance isremarkably better than the Luna or other iPod clock radios I've tested.Sony has done a great job with the ICF-C1iP. It is an uprightdesign, with most of the unit behind the iPod, in a slanted design withcontrols at the top. The iPod dock accepts universal adapters, but theyaren't really needed as Sony has an adjustable supporting plate behindthe iPod. Unlike the Luna, which attempts to duplicate the iPod menus on itsdisplay, the Sony ICF-C1iP includes a remote control that lets youcompletely control the iPod menus as if you were manipulating thescroll wheel. Quite impressive. Sound quality is very good for a clock radio - with full bass andeven midtones. Sony includes a simulated mode they call "Mega XPand"that in my experience made the music sound muddied and under-sampled.Your mileage my vary.The blue-backlit clock is located in the iPod dock area, and 3brightness levels are available. In my experience, even the lowestsetting is a bit too bright, but not enough to disturb me at night. Iwish that the display were slightly larger, although the high contrastlets me see the time without my glasses from a reasonable distance.And, unlike most iPod clock radios, the radio reception isoutstanding - with an external AM antenna provided. The unit has dualalarms, which can be set to iPod (you can even select a wakeup volume),Radio, or Buzzer. On the downside, the battery backup for the buzzer alarm and clockis a small expensive lithium battery. And, if your relying on just thebuzzer to wake you up it's not very loud. You also have to be carefulwhen changing the alarms to make sure that you don't accidentally turnthe alarm off. But all of these are minor issues. However, these areall very minor issues that don't detract from the unit overall.All in all, in my experience, this is the best iPod clock radio you can buy.If The Price Reflected The Sound, This Sony iPod Dock Would Be Far CheaperI have been using the Sony ICF-C1iP iPod Dock w/clock for about twomonths now. I bought it for my office, so that I could listen to theradio and also play songs from my iPod Touch. As far as looks go, thisSony is quite attractive. The buttons, located on top of the unit, arelarge and arranged well. The clock is a nice backlit blue, and is quitepleasing to the eye. The iPod dock, itself, is well made and offers anadjustable back support, so that every iPod model will be held in placefirmly. Overall, the style, design and features of this unit are 5-starall the way.Now for the weakness, which is arguably the most important featureof any music playing device. The sound quality of this Sony iPod dockis very average; barely. There is just no low end (bass). Don't get mewrong, the music doesn't sound tinny or distorted, when played atreasonable volume levels, but it just doesn't have the full-bodiedsound that I desire. I wasn't expecting Bose SoundDock quality fromthis item, but I assumed that it would sound much better than it does.Highs are fairly crisp, and the midrange is very pronounced, but notesand sounds cut off quite sharply below that. I cannot find the ratedfrequency response of this model but I'm sure the numbers are fairlyunimpressive. The stereo soundfield is also extremely narrow, even withthe included "MEGA Xpand" feature turned on.The included remote control is nice, and it controls nearly everyfunction of this device. However, all clock and alarm related featuresmust be controlled from the dock itself. The unit is fairly large,considering that it is advertised as a clock radio. I don't know asthough I would want this thing sitting on my nightstand. But I didn'tbuy it to be used as a clock radio, so I am not rating it as such.Overall I am fairly pleased with this device, as a means to play somelow volume music in my office. The mostimpressive was the ability to fully control the ipod from the remotecontrol WITHOUT having to buy a special attachment from the Apple storeso that the ipod will recognize a remote.In addition, I thought I would have to set not only the alarm onthe Sony, but also set the ipod itself to go off at 7am. Instead, Ifound that the Sony "wakes up" the ipod to go off for 7am, so I did nothave to set up the ipod alarm at all. I love my new clock radio. The only drawback is that you have toplace the ipod in the dock the entire night, which means that yourbattery is constantly charging the entire night. From my understanding,this leads to early burnout of the battery. I wish there were a way toturn off the battery charger, but still have all the otherfunctionality.

Review by Actual Zune and IPod ownerI own a 5th generation iPod and bought a Zune last week. Why?Primarily because I am a gadget-freak and I like the idea of a biggerscreen and WiFi sharing of songs. The Zune comes in a very nice package and with clear installationinstructions. I didn't run into any problems on Windows XP SP2 so Icannot comment on some of the problems other people have encountered. After using it for a week this is how the Zune stacks up against the iPod: iPod has the advantage in: -Size: Zune is slightly longer and thicker than the iPod but it's not that noticable. Slight advantage for iPod. -Software: Zune software is nice and works but iPod's software ismore straightforward and easier to use. Yes, even my iPod softwareoccasionally crashes but overall I like it better. -Applications & Games: no games and apps on Zune yet, somenice apps on the iPod but the games on iPod are pathetic. That's whatmy Nintendo DS is for. -Many more accessories! It took me a while to find a nice casefor the Zune but I assume this will get better over time. Still iPodrules the accessory market. -External USB Device: I can use my iPod as a giant "memorystick", the Zune has this function disabled - although there is way toenable that (do a Google search). Zune and iPod are even: -Battery Life: Zune (WiFi turned off) and iPod are about the same, 13 1/2 to 14 hours with screen off. -Interface: I liked Zune's menu structure much better than iPod'sbut I miss the iPod's great click-wheel. Also interface respondsquicker on the Zune. -Sound Quality: listening to music with my Sony headphones I could not hear any difference in sound quality. -Headphones: the included headphones with the iPod and the Zune areequally crappy. The first accessory you buy should be new headphones. Zune has the advantage in: -Screen: ZUNE WINS by a huge margin, screen is bigger and brighter, absolutely stunning! -Materials: iPod's sensitive chrome shell always bugged me and thescreen on my iPod is horribly scratched despite a protective case,Zune's black/blue shell looks very nice and it seems to be imperviousto finger prints, Zune's screen seems much more scratch resistent too. -Video: Forget the iPod! I converted some DVDs to WM9 and watchedthem on my Zune, it's a delight! The screen, the landscape mode, thebrightness - wonderful. On a high quality setting I was able to fitaround 60h of video onto the Zune. -Pictures: again thanks to the screen the Zune beats the iPod.Finally I can show off some baby pictures without people squinting. -WiFi: yeah, I like it. Granted the 3-day/3-play limitation isannoying but I have received a few cool songs so far. Problem is: therearen't too many Zune owners yet. -Radio: HUGE advantage for the Zune. I am at the gym, watching TVand tuning in to the sounds on my Zune. Why Apple hasn't included thisyet in the iPod is beyond me. -Song purchase: I love the option of the "all you can eat" for$15/month. Granted most of my music is ripped from CDs but $15 permonth for all the music I want is pretty compelling. OVERALL VERDICT: I love my iPod, I LOVE MY ZUNE EVEN MORE. IfMicrosoft can write some applications and games and improve the Zune PCsoftware they'll have a perfect consumer device. To be fair: if you already have an iPod and have no need for radioand better video capabilities then there is no need to upgrade to aZune. If you want better video, like the idea of radio and WiFi thenthe Zune is the way to go. If you are in the market for a new MP3player in the $250 price range the Zune should be on the top of yourshopping research list. Most important: ignore all the fanboy garbage of "Microsoft isevil" and "Apple sucks" and stick with the facts. Reading some of thevery loud "reviews" below I can only wonder how many of these writersactually own any of these devices.It's all about the sound...I got my Zune just after Christmas this year when everyone wasshowing up at work with their new iPods, Creative Zens, and otherpersonal media players. Feeling left out, I decided to go check out themarket to see if I could find a product that would meet my needs as aconsumer. After a week of research and checking out the store displays,I decided to purchase the Zune player and I've been very satisfied withthe product overall.During my research, I found some bad reviews about syncing issuesand battery life for the Zune player. However, as I researched furtherinto other products I found this was not uncommon for almost everyplayer on the market, especially the iPod. Although it stands to reasonthat the iPod would have more issues posted on the internet since it isthe most popular personal media player.So it came down to 3 players from which I decided to choose: AppleiPod (30 gig), Creative Zen Vision M, and the Zune. Each of theseproducts had the feature set I was looking for and each was within afew dollars of the others in price. So now it was time for the "tastetest".I went to my local electronics store where all 3 products weredisplayed and asked a sales associate to assist me. As I handled eachof the players, my first impression was that the Zune felt sturdy andwell made. It's thicker than the iPod and not quite as wide as the Zen,which felt just right in my hand. I also preferred the flat blackfinish on the Zune player to the glossy black Zen or the "kitchenappliance" white of the iPod. The OS and navigation on all of the players was easy to figure outwith only a few differences between them. While I like the wheelcontrol of the iPod (probably it's best feature), both the Zune and Zenoffered compensatory navigation methods to locate media within a largelist of files. The display on the iPod was a bit small compared to theother 2 players, but it was still quite readable.Finally, with all things being even, it came down to the sound. Iplugged in a set of of inexpensive lightweight Sony headphones that Ihad brought to the store with me and listened to each product with thesample content on different preset EQ settings. To me, the Zune had thebest sound overall, which was the selling point. The high end was crispand clear while the low end was deep and rich, even on my cheapheadphones.Final thoughts: So far I've been quite happy with the Zune player. The battery lifeis good when listening to music but a bit short when viewing videocontent. I like the album art display when browsing my music contentand when playing. The picture slide show features are a nice touch aswell and provide a way for me to share my photos in a portable manner. Also, Microsoft is working to update the features of the Zunethrough firmware updates. So the feature set you see now could well getbetter as the product development progresses. I'm personally hopingthat Microsoft decides to support their own Plays-For-Sure technologyto open the available online content and make it more competitive withthe Zen.Finally, if you purchase a Zune player, get a decent set ofheadphones. The headphones shipped with the product do not do itjustice. This is Especially true if you're like me and you rip your CDcollection to your player at a quality bit rate.Pros:- Full rich sound- Easy content navigation- Large display- Photo slide show feature- Good battery life for playing musicCons:- Headphones shipped with the product are substandard- Battery life severely shortened when viewing video content- Not currently Plays-For-Sure compatibleGood jumping off point for MicrosoftIt's impossible to not compare the Zune to the iPod so I'm not evengoing to try, but let's get one thing out of the way right quick:Anyone who calls the Zune an iPod killer needs to have their headexamined. Let's not forget that there are many people who have investedhundreds or thousands of dollars into iTunes music, so they're prettymuch iPod customers for life(as Zune customers will be if they chooseto use the Zune marketplace, but more on that later). And in case youhaven't noticed, the iPod is a pretty darn good device. The Zunedoesn't really offer anything that should have iPod+iTunes usersjumping ship, but it does offer a compelling option for those lookingto purchase a product like this for the first time or iPod users whohave chosen to continue to buy CDs instead of digital albums.The first thing you'll notice after purchasing the Zune is that ifthey ever gave away some type of award for product packaging, the Zunewould probably win it. The brown portion of the Zune box slips off toreveal a compartmentalized box inside that includes the Zune, thedocking cable, stock earbuds, the Zune software, the token cheap feltcase, and the documentation. Onto the Zune itself. Even at 30 gigs it's a bit longer and thickerthan the 80 gig iPod. It is substantially heavier but not to a fault.Those looking to use an MP3 player for active use will probably want aflash player anyway. Where the Zune holds a big advantage over the iPodhowever is the rubbery-plastic finish. Whereas the iPod's glossy finishis a magnet for fingerprints, the Zune's rubbery plastic feel attractsvirtually no fingerprints, and when it does they simply wipe off. Thescreen accumulates them quickly, and while a thin plastic film coatingis included, it has some large text on it, so you might have to investin a third-party screen protector. Bummer. The control pad has beenoften maligned for not being a scroll wheel, but I don't understandwhy. Is moving your thumb around in circles really THAT intuitive? Onto the software. It's a bit dissapointing that the Zune doesn'tsimply intergrate seamlessly with Windows Media Player 11 like most MP3players now do. Instead you'll have to install the dedicated Zunesoftware, which is essentially Windows Media Player 11 in some newclothing and with the Zune Marketplace built in. There have been manyreports of hiccups installing the new software, so beware. It seems Iwas lucky. Once you do get the software going, syncing your musiclibrary to your player is a breeze, with a transfer speed of about twoseconds per song.As I said, the Zune software is essentially WMP11 with the ZuneMarketplace included. The first time you enter the marketplace thesoftware will ask you for your Windows Live ID. This is where one verycool perk comes into play if you are an XBox Live user. When you loginwith your ID, your Zune Marketplace account automatically links up withyour XBox Live account, so you can share your Microsoft Points youalready have across both services! Very very convienent. Unfortunately, that may be the highlight of the Zune Marketplace.Graphically, it can't hold a candle to iTunes and is pretty darn ugly.Users can't review albums, and it as of yet doesn't offer anythingbesides music(this is probably going to change very very soon). I don'teven use an iPod and I like browsing the iTunes store to see what's newand read user reviews. I couldn't imagine using the Zune Marketplacefor anything except buying an album. But even that wouldn't beadvisable, since the music you purchase on the Zune marketplace willwork ONLY on the Microsoft Zune and nothing else. So until it startsoffering TV Shows and movies, the Zune Marketplace is a major dud.This is where the real treat comes in, once you get your musiconto the Zune and fire it up for the first time, many of your initialdoubts will vanish. The screen is large, bright, and the background isfully customizable. The interface is a huge breath of fresh air afterusing the stale Artist>Album>Song system on iPods and Creativeplayers for so many years. Instead, Artist, Album, and Song are listedhorizontally at the top of the screen, and as you move the cursor overeach option all of the items spill out down the substantial screen,with thumbnail album art included! When you do choose a song, the albumart for that song dominates the screen, and the sound quality isexcellent. You can easily adjust the volume by pressing up-and-down onthe control pad, and scroll through the song by pushing left and right.So music playback is a huge "hit", but how about the video? Theformat support is pretty limited, and while the Zune software willconvert just about anything, the playback format of converted videos ispretty poor. It was also a puzzling move for the Zune to have a 16x9screen but only support 4:3 resolution. The stretching of the picturedoesn't really take that much away, but it seems a bit pointless. Onehandy feature is that the control pad will re-orient the controls forthe Zune when you hold the player sideways.One last thing, you might have noticed I haven't even mentionedthe much-hyped wi-fi feature. Why? Because it's practically useless.Songs received via wi-fi transfer can only be played three times withina three day period, and songs by some artists(such as the RollingStones) won't even transfer at all! The wi-fi capabilities of the Zunecertainly offers exciting possibilities for future firmware updates,but they're certainly not present now.So that's it. The Zune offers nothing that will have seasonediPod+iTunes users jumping ship, and it certainly' won't kill the iPod,but the exceptional physical design, vastly superior user interface,and wi-fi possiblities in the future warrant a serious look by shoppers.

Excellent Built Quality and Sound, Mediocre RemoteThe most important aspect of any speaker system is the fidelitywith which it reproduces one's music. As one would expect from a trueHi-Fi speaker manufacturer, the Klipsch iGroove HG does a very nice jobof reproducing high quality sound in a relatively compact space.Everything from Strauss to the Crystal Method to Led Zeppelin hassounded near-flawless in my testing, with only mild distortion of bassat high volume levels. Realistically you can't expect a small speakersystem to match the range of a large floor-standing speaker set, butcompared to the competing Bose, Altec and JBL systems, the Klipsch doesa better job of reproducing a wide range of music with crisp highs andrich lows.The only gripe I have about this system is the remote. Aside frombeing a little flimsy, you cannot control the iPod's menu with it. Youcan jump forward and backward, pause and play and raise or lower thevolume, as well as powering the unit on or off. Still it's not enoughto warrant a switch to others systems IMO. You will not find a bettercompact iPod Speaker system, especially not one which is compatiblewith a wide range of iPods from newer and older generations. Highlyrecommended.What's up with the volume control?If there is one negative thing about the igroove, it's the factthat the volume resets to a default setting when the system is turnedoff. I like to play my music late at night and when first turning iton, it's set at a VERY high volume which can startle you if you're notprepared. Other than that, I see no other negatives with this system. Ijust replaced the stereo in my bedroom with this little wonder and therack system is going into my gym. The igroove will not sound as good asa true stereo; however, it will replace any old boombox or the likes.Please don't expect this to sound like an entertainment center becauseit's far from it. These type of set-ups are designed for use in a smallarea like an office/bedroom, so please don't expect outstandingaudiophile sound or you will be disappointed; however, for the size ofthe device, the sound is absolutely amazing. I personally like the sound of this one over the Bose Soundock. TheKlipsch has much better sounding highs as opposed to the Bose and itseems to have a cleaner, fuller sound. And for 33% less than the Bose,what are you waiting for? Wired magazine test top pickWIRED (2006 holiday Test issue) gave it the Editor's pick in thegenre of MP3 speakers (8 out of possible 10) although they did not testthe slightly more expensive Bose Sound Dock. No video output port, butoffers true reproduction over the entire audio spectrum.To quote their review: "Wired: cool curved design, lush fullbodied sound. Dock adapts to non iPod players, with remote. Tired:slight audible rattle on bassy tracks, as volume increases highs tendto dominate. shallow rear handle is difficult to grip securely, doesn'ttake batteries"I personally have the Bose product, which is wonderful, but am buying the Klipsch as a gift for my son (more in my budget)

Excellent Nano AlternativeSince I have most of my music files ripped in WMA format, I've beenlooking for a flash MP3 player to compete with the IPOD Nano. Aftermuch research, I decided to take a chance on this newly releasedplayer. I'm very impressed to start. The player is small (just a bitthicker than the Nano), and fairly light. The screen shows excellentcolor- based on the menus. I'm not planning to use it much for video orphotos, so I'm not very concerned with the screen size, which isexpectedly small. The player in general is very easy to use. I lookedover the quick reference guide and didn't even bother with the userguide (user guide is in PDF format on the cd-rom.) The overallappearance is excellent. You can load music by dragging and dropping, or using Windows MediaPlayer 10. I prefer to use WMP10 to sync, since I have my musicorganized well. Syncing in this manner was very simple. I didn'tencounter any issues with the first two syncs I've performed. If youhave your id3 tags correct, the Sansa will display your music byArtist, Album, Songs, or Genere. There's also a "To Go playlist". TheSansa sorted my music just fine. The display is informative whenplaying music. The sound so far is excellent. I've used a few differentheadsets to test it and have no complaints.The center dial/wheel rotates and glows in a bright blue. It allowsyou to scroll through menu items and to increase/decrease the volume.The directional buttons around the wheel are a little difficult to usewith only one hand. Because the center dial is raised so much, you endup needing to use the tips of your fingers to press the buttons thatsurround it. I suppose it will take a little getting used to- but it'snot a dealbreaker for me. Following the precedent set by other companies. The USB connectoris of course proprietary. This is currently the only way to charge theSansa, so don't lose it. I don't see any wall/travel charges offeredyet- even at the Sandisk Website. Since it's new- there aren't reallyany accessories offered. This isn't a concern to me personally- so Ibought it anyway. I definitely would like a separate chargingapparatus, rather than having to charge via USB- so I hope Sandiskoffers such an item, sooner rather than later. It comes with a small velvet pouch. I'll be searching for some sortof "skin" to protect the player, instead of relying on the pouch. It'sjust not efficient if you want to protect and use the player at thesame time. Pros:It looks beautiful. PROS: Fantastic quality, functionality, and price. Durable

CONS: Lack of accessories

In the world of MP3 players, it seems there exists two categories;
I-Pod and everyone else. As an employee of a major retail electronics
outlet, the sheer volume of customers coming in requesting I-Pods (for
no other reason than they saw it on TV), is a testament to Apple's
overwhelming marketing success in the industry. However, while I-Pods
account for about 60% of all sales of MP3 players, they constitute a
larger than average share of our MP3 repairs and service. Additionally,
the sheer over saturation coupled with the fact that consumers are
forced to use I-tunes to interface their songs encouraged me to think
outside of the I-Pod empire, and research various competitor models.
After comparing several models of MP3 players I decided to
purchase the Scandisk e250, it has proven to be a great choice. The
design is slightly similar to an I-Pod, however its' dark colors and
sophisticated design distinguished it from other run of the mill
handhelds on the market. The most impressive feature on this unit is
its' display screen. While similar in size to some of its competitors,
the vibrant display is bright, clear, easy to read, and is advertised
as scratch resistant. Best of all, a 2GB model (about 500 songs) cost
twenty dollars less than a comparable I-pod.
In terms of overall functionality, I can't praise the e250
enough. A very easy interface by way of USB will load any file format
of music and mpeg video for easy organization and storage. The FM tuner
provided, delivers a strong signal for radio fans, and the unit also
stores digital photos and movie clips. The menu is very well organized
and easy to navigate when you're on the go.
In terms of durability, I've owned this player for about a month and it has shown almost no sign of wear and tear, it has gone with me virtually everywhere in various conditions indoors and outdoors. I tend to take care of my gear, but as a 21 year old college student, the e250's durability is tested daily, and has surpassed any MP3 player I have previously owned. Perhaps the only drawback to the e250 is the sparse selection of cases and other accessories for this unit. However, as popularity of the brand increases (which it hopefully will when others learn of its quality value) availability of accessories should follow suit. Overall, the e250 delivers outstanding quality and value for the money.
